April 16 – April 27, 2014
Prize Money: $250,000.00
Bells Beach: Jan Juc/Torquay, Victoria, Australia
TIME DIFFERENCE: GMT + 10
COORDINATES: 38º20' S, 144º19' E
BAGGAGE CLAIM: Melbourne Avalon Airport, Geelong (GEX)
TRANSPORTATION: Mobility requires a little more effort down at Bells in comparison to some other stops on tour and while it may not be the same trek as Margaret River, you'll need some wheels. Rent a car. Melbourne is about an hour away from Torquay, so if you want to be mobile once you land at Bells, you're going to need a whip.
ATTITUDE: The natural surroundings of Bells Beach bring out the beast in the ASP Top 17, making for a vicious event each year. The chilly water temps and rustic environment makes the girls hungry to ring the coveted Bell. When the waves of Torquay cooperate and Bells' natural amphitheater combines, it's an amazing show. It's worth it to battle the elements and watch the show go down.

Bells in all of its glory. Hopefully we see more of this in 2014!

THE WAVE: Bells is a beefy wave, and is comprised of several breaks that make the pointbreak unique. With The Bowl, Outside Bells, Rincon, Centreside, Southside and Winkipop among them, it can be one leg-burner of a ride with the right swell direction. Here's the breakdown on Bells: Outside Bells is the main break that produces a long, fast, even wall when it gets above six foot. The Bowl is the steep final section of the wave, and just east of The Bowl, Winki runs over a stretch of reef producing a quick, hollow wave that often surpasses conditions at Bells proper.
PERKS: Bells kicks off in April, which is the best time of year to capitalize on fabled pointbreak in all of its glory. Combine the ideal swell window with Melbourne's rich history and you've got heaps of madness to sink your teeth into. Bands, art, shows, sick waves – it's on!
PERILS: Bring your weather gear! It can be frigid, raining and after a long surf in the already cold water, you may find yourself looking for cover. It's a different world down in Torquay when it comes to weather and you need to pack for everything. While Bells is traditionally cold, it's been unseasonably hot as well. Hell, who knows, pack for all seasons, because you might feel like you've seen all of them during the two week waiting period.
APRES SURF: Although Torquay is widely known as a sleepy surf town, you can count on the Rip Curl Pro to bring the party. The Torquay hotel will definitely be hopping when the show is in town and you can always take in one of the many fine eateries the area is famous for.
ASP WOMEN'S WORLD TOUR HISTORY: The boys have enjoyed 50 years of Bells Beach action, and the women have been right their win them lead Gail Couper who won an astonishing 10 Bells' titles in the 1960s and 1970s. Other notable female performers from the Bells Bowl include three-time winners Margo Oberg, Pauline Menczer, Lisa Andersen, Layne Beachley and Stephanie Gilmore. Let's see who adds their name to the historic list in 2014.
